Boca’s Newest Doctors Hail from Surprising Location

Last Friday, 4 graduates of St. George’s University, a medical school in Grenada, matched into residency programs in Boca Raton.
Boca Raton, FL – In fact, many future U.S. doctors will come from international medical schools — and that’s a good thing. Without graduates from abroad, Florida won’t be able to keep up with the demand for doctors. It’ll need thousands of additional primary care doctors by 2030 to meet the state’s basic needs.
That’s where international medical graduates come in. They’re crucial in fighting the shortage, as they’re more likely to enter primary care specialties and practice in underserved areas than their domestically-trained counterparts.
In total, St. George’s sent 72 graduates to Florida this year. The university is also the third-largest provider of doctors to the United States — with three-quarters of grads entering primary care specialties, and one-third practicing in medical shortage regions.
