CDC Releases New Survey On Youth Suicide In Florida

Last month, you received the statistics regarding national rates of suicidal behavior in youth.  I thought you may be interested in statistics that are specific to your state.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the results from their 2017 Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System on June 14, 2018.

In Florida, when young people were asked:

  • Have you experienced the feeling of hopelessness and sadness for a constant period of two weeks or greater during the past twelve months (possible beginning of clinical depression)?  27.8% answered YES
  • Have you seriously considered suicide in the past twelve months?  13.8% answered YES
  • Have you made a plan to commit suicide in the past twelve months?  10.7% answered YES
  • Have you attempted suicide in the past twelve months?  7.6% answered YES
