    Numbers just released showed Palm Beach County mortgages underwater fell below 20%, an improvement over 40% just two years ago. Higher prices and a rebound in the market are the reason. On the flip side, mortgage lending standards continue to remain tight as skittish bankers refusing credit worthy borrowers because they fear they will be unable to sell the loans to Freddie Mac and Freddie Mae.

 

     Palm Beach County property values soared $20 billion in the past year and property owners will pay nearly $200 million more in taxes because of the increase. Owners in Jupiter, Wellington, Delray Beach and Boca will see the largest hike. Countywide market value on property increased 13% to $182 billion.

 

     Publix has a 50% market share in South Florida which Publix founder heirs own 21%, valued at $5 billion and employees own 79% valued at 425 billion.

    Boca Raton City Council has a public hearing set for Sept. 9 on new proposed rules for home businesses, but people who just work virtually out of their house shouldn’t have to worry. Working at home by computer doesn’t mean the city will require a permit.

 

     The Friends of the Boca Raton Library Foreign Film Series will screen the Academy Award nominated Waste Land, set in Brazil, and directed by Lucy Walker, on Tuesday, September 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the new Downtown Library.  The film will be followed by a discussion led by the Library’s Neil Schulhoff.
