TRADER JOE’S MAY NOT OPEN AS SCHEDULED

• The new Trader Joe’s in Boca may not open as scheduled on Friday Sept. 26, as the city wants underground power lines, which will reduce parking.

FEDERAL DISTRICT JUDGE REVERSED ORDER OF BOCA RESIDENT TO PRISON

• Federal District Judge Paul Crotty reversed his previous finding ordering Boca resident Ross Mandell to prison on June 13, 2014, after reviewing the record, & determining Mandell should remain free on Bail until his appellate remedies are fully litigated.  On June 18, 2014, a second circuit blog written and published by Edward S. Zas, of the Federal Public Defenders office, revealed serious legal errors in the Appellate panel’s decision that denied Mandell’s appeal brief, that in fact supported Mandell’s position for retrial or dismissal of the case entirely. RETRACTED NEWS ABOUT MED-CARE 

• On June 18, 2014, this column mistakenly referenced an ongoing federal regulatory investigation of Med-Care Diabetic and Medical Supplies, and erroneously stated that one of the principals of the company served a prison term for Medicare fraud. These were incorrect statements, which were found to be false, but based on incorrect reporting from another news outlet, and are being retracted. A recent federal civil suit filed against Med-Care was dismissed this past week as baseless

• Seventy-five new townhouses could go up soon on the northeast corner of Military Trail and Spanish River Boulevard.Spanish River Townhomes’ 5.9 acre site at 4202 N. Military Trail in Boca Raton was rezoned from commercial to multi-family residential, and the master and site plans were among items unanimously approved by the city’s Planning & Zoning Board at the June 19 meeting. The recommendations go to the City Council, on summer break until July 22. The houses will cost from $400,000 to $600,000, and back up on Palm Beach County’s Pond Hawk Nature Preserve on one side. The proposed complex will sit across the street from Pope John Paul II High School, Don Estridge High Tech Middle School and the city’s newest park, de Hoernle/Spanish River Athletic Facility. The Spanish River Library is next door.
• West Boca Medical Center has started making $2 million in complete renovations to the hospital’s maternity suites and is offering a trio of classes for new mothers, whether they’re patients or not.
• Banks are using less of their assets for mortgage loans, previously using 36% before the real estate bust. Now it has fallen to 18% last year.
• Palm Beach County home sales for May hit 1640 closings, up 11% from the previous year, 758 were cash deals. Sales of condos and townhouses for May reached 1480, up 9% from the previous May, with a median price of $135,000, a five year high, 244 deals were short sales or foreclosures. First time home buyers are having a tough time increased prices, lack of affordable inventory and tight mortgage requirements.
• Florida receives $100 of every red light $158 fine, $45 goes to local municipalities and $13 goes to a medical trust fund. The state pocketed $53 million in fines last year.
• Pure Barre, 9834 Glades Road, opened in the Westwinds of Boca shopping center, at the southwest corner of 441 and Glades Road, offering 55 minute ballet barre workouts, blending elements of dance, Pilates and yoga for body conditioning.

Family activities, including a full-size Ferris wheel, obstacle courses and sports activities will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the city, and the All-Star Band will start playing 1960s and ’70s music at 7 p.m. Both shows are shot over a lake. The city show is 21 minutes and the West Boca show is 10-12 minutes. Food is available at both venues and coolers are allowed, but no pets, except service animals.
