Hit-and-Run in Delray Beach Led to an 18-Year Sentence

In December of 2018, a Delray Beach man was responsible for a hit-and-run that killed two, and his sentencing has finally been announced.

38-year-old James Avirett hit a police patrol car on Congress Avenue at 8:25 p.m. while attempting to make a U-turn.

The officer was not injured but Avirett fleed the scene and ran into a Fiat on S.W. 29th Street.

The Fiat driver was not injured but the impact caused Avirett to swerve onto the sidewalk hitting two pedestrians.

The pedestrians were 77-year-old Michael Fogg and Avirett’s 41-year-old girlfriend Dara Treechatinan who both ended up dying.

WPTV states that on Monday morning, James Avirett pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicular homicide and fleeing the scene.

As a result, prosecutors agreed to an 18-year sentence.
