Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, in collaboration with the Donald M. Ephraim Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival, and the Mandel JCC present the film Tikotin, A Life Devoted to Japanese Art. A discussion led by Morikami’s Chief Curator and Cultural Director, Tamara Joy will follow the film.
Felix Tikotin (1893-1986): sophisticate, bon vivant, egocentric and pioneer in collecting Japanese art. By the early 1930s, he drew together an impressive collection of Japanese woodcuts, prints, paintings and ceramics. As a Jew, Tikotin fled from Berlin to Holland, where he and his family survived the war in hiding. In this gripping documentary, Tikotin’s grandson Jaron Borensztajn interviews Tikotin’s family members and friends in Israel and across Europe to unravel his grandfather’s complicated past. A portrait emerges of a charismatic, strong, but also headstrong man whose family always came second to his pursuit of art. Today, the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art shines on Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel.
