Florida’s Seaweed Situation Is Here To Stay

If you have taken a trip to a South Florida beach lately, you have probably noticed an excessive amount of seaweed. This seaweed presence is nothing new and has been persisting for a long while now.

If you are wondering when this issue will clear up, the answer is it won’t.

According to WPTV, one researcher stated that the seaweed washing up on the Florida shores may be around for a while this summer.

Dr. Brian LaPointe of FAU’s Harbor Branch Institute also believes that this is the new normal. LaPointe recently published findings that demonstrate the current sargassum bloom will move across the Atlantic, which is also referred to as, “the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt.”

The results of LaPointe’s research shows that the seaweed will not only persist, but also worsen.

The increase in seaweed is being credited to fertilizer runoff in North and South America.

It is clear that Florida official’s need to develop a way to adapt to this situation in order to improve it. Because Florida is extremely reliant on tourism, the abundance of seaweed is something that needs to be assessed due to its negative impact on vacation goers.
