FAU’s Incoming Freshman Class Boasts Highest GPA Ever

Florida Atlantic University’s incoming freshman class boasts the highest GPA in the university’s history. For the fall semester, the average high school GPA for first-time-in-college (FTIC) students is a 3.96, up from a 3.82 last fall.

“FAU has increased its admissions standards, and this number reflects that,” said FAU Provost Gary W. Perry. “We are committed to attracting high-achieving students, and we will continue to improve FAU’s academic reputation.”

FAU received more than 20,500 freshman applications and more than 8,300 transfer applications for fall. The total number of new freshmen enrolled at the Boca Raton campus is 3,243. FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College at the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter will welcome 143 new students for this semester.

Thousands of on-campus residential students returned to campus this week during FAU’s Move-In Day. FAU President John Kelly joined faculty, staff and student volunteers in assisting new students with carrying their belongings. Student residence halls at both the Boca Raton and Jupiter campuses are at 100 percent capacity this semester, with 4,150 students living on campus in Boca and 282 students living on campus in Jupiter.

While I applaud FAU for increasing its academic standards, I can’t help but wonder how it is possible for FAU to have an incoming GPA of 3.96 which is higher than any school in the country — including all of the Ivies. Is this figure determined from the widely accepted unweighted GPA scale of 4.0 or an unweighted scale? The number 3.96 is not realistic since it would mean that the average student received less than an A only one time in his/her entire high school career) nor is it an apples-to-apples comparison of schools who compare GPAs and not HPAs.
