Theater Productions from Boca High and West Boca High Nominated for Multiple Cappie Awards

On Tuesday, May 14, theater programs from 26 schools in Palm Beach and Broward County will be celebrated at the 14th Annual Critics’ Awards Program, affectionately nicknamed the “Cappies.”

Of the 26 nominated schools, two of them are here in Boca Raton, those being Boca High and West Boca High.

Boca High’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat earned the school 15 Cappie nominations; the third highest of any school being honored at the ceremony.

The production’s nominations are:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Song: “Those Canaan Days”
  • Best Female Vocalist: Channing Ramsey
  • Best Marketing and Publicity: Matez and Crew
  • Best Props
  • Best Stage Management and Stage Crew: Hunsucker and Crew
  • Best Female Dancer: Allegra Mannarino
  • Best Costumes: Hunsucker, Narino, Schmidt and Crew
  • Best Special Effects and/or Technology
  • Best Sound: Kachur, Lubin, Benedict
  • Best Lead Actor in a Musical: Trevor Wayne
  • Best Supporting Actor in a Musical: Alec Taylor
  • Best Featured Actor in a Musical: Matthew Moore
  • Best Lighting: Adams, Posner, Chapman and Guin
  • Best Ensemble in a Musical: Brothers

Meanwhile, West Boca High’s production of Chicago is nominated for 14 Cappies.

Chicago’s nominations are:

  • Best Musical
  • Best Costumes: Heather Goughan, Jewelia Carter, Elizabeth Yarris and Crew
  • Best Lead Actress in a Musical: Alexia Assuncao
  • Best Song: “We Both Reached for the Gun”
  • Best Comic Actor in a Musical: Matthew Madden
  • Best Female Dancer: Carolyn Castillo
  • Best Sets: Ryan Hartman, Cristina Rodriguez, George Said and Crew
  • Best Hair and Makeup: Cristina Cautero, Amanda Helbling, Victoria Martin, Missy Varela
  • Best Ensemble in a Musical: Male Dance Ensemble (Roxie’s Boys)
  • Best Male Vocalist: Ryan Lim
  • Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Hillary Corniel
  • Best Male Dancer: Samuel Cadieux
  • Best Stage Management and Stage Crew: Mathew Kanterman, Nick Morelli, Kayla Stricker
  • Best Featured Actress in a Musical: Samantha Frankenbush

While at the ceremony, students from the nominated shows will perform songs and pieces of their plays for the audience.

The nominees were selected by student critics participating in the program, who wrote reviews of the plays they attended while the winners are chosen by students from the nominated schools via a peer-review vote.

The Cappies will be held at 7 p.m. at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $20 and are available through Ticketmaster.
