Summer Youth College Takes on Boca Raton

By: Marissa Obstbaum

On July 23, 2014 the Summer Youth College program of Palm Beach State College paid a visit to The Boca Raton Tribune. The kids ranging from 13 to 14 years old learned about what goes on in an actual newsroom from the design and production to marketing.

This was not the only group involved in the SYC though. During the summer there are 400 to 500 students that go on various trips around town. They set out on their educational journeys every Wednesday in which they experience things they wouldn’t know about if it hadn’t been for this program.

All transportation is provided and SYC is sponsored by the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce. The businesses thankfully volunteer their services to support this college youth program.

This “summer camp” is solely based on education and hands on experience. Of course the kids have fun while doing it with their friends, but they really learn about real life careers. The students visit other venues such as the Boca Raton Library and the Delray Beach Court House.

It will be the last year for some of the children as parts of this program. This is an 8-14 year old camp with the possibility of becoming a volunteer once 15 years old to help with the younger children. This is a great way to achieve community service in a fun and educational manner.

The Summer Youth College has locations in Boca Raton, Lake Worth, and Palm Beach Gardens for your convenience. You can find out more about this program by visiting www.palmbeachstate.edu/syc.
