Pap Corps Walkathon raises $250,000 for Cancer Research

BOCA RATON — About 3,200 people converged upon Florida Atlantic University’s Boca Raton campus for the Pap Corps’ 12th Annual Walkathon, raising $250,000 for cancer research. This event is the only corps-wide, public celebration of the charity’s 60th year, a great milestone for the largest all-volunteer organization in the United States dedicated solely to funding research for all types of cancer.

The event had a festive feel as walkers returned from their lap around the campus to partake in a delicious tailgate barbeque while enjoying a live band, dancers, games, Dolphin Cheerleader appearances and more.

“We were delighted to once again have former WPTV anchor Jim Sackett be our emcee and kick off the festivities,” said Sheila Alper, event co-chair. “This year’s Walkathon really had a special feel to it. We received so much support from all of the Pap Corps chapters and the community. And we are thrilled to have raised so much money for cancer research.”

“Our walkathon is a celebration,” said Rita Seiff. “There were so many amazing stories of people sharing their triumphs over cancer. And to see the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors interacting with all of our members makes us truly remember why we work so hard to make these events a success.”

The Pap Corps has donated over $40 million to cancer research since 1952; more than $29 million in the last 10 years alone. These funds provide the seed money for vital research programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, South Florida’s only university-based cancer center.
