🌀 Dorian gains strength, becomes Category 5 Hurricane. South Florida under a Tropical Storm warning

As of 8 a.m. Sunday, Hurricane Dorian has become a Category 5 storm with 160 mph winds, moving west at 8 mph.

In a shift from last night’s update, South Florida is now back in the forecast cone.

With hurricane force winds extending outward up to 30 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 105 miles, a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued from north of Golden Beach to Deerfield Beach.

On this track, the core of Dorian should be near or over portions of the northwestern Bahamas today, and move closer to the Florida east coast late Monday through Tuesday.

Some fluctuations in intensity are likely, but Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days.

According to the National Hurricane Center, life-threatening storm surge, hurricane force winds, and heavy rainfall are expected over the northwestern Bahamas.

The NHC says a slower westward motion should continue for the next day or two, followed by a gradual turn toward the northwest.
