Could Florida Be Seeing a Tropical Storm Soon?

As we approach the middle of storm season in Florida, it is possible we may be looking at the development of a tropical storm approaching.

Orlando Sentinel discussed that a tropical wave developing in the southeast Caribbean sea has a 20 percent chance of becoming a tropical system over the course of the next 5 days.

A tropical wave, also known as easterly wave, is characterized by its cyclonic curvature moving east to west across the tropics.

It could move northwest with flash flooding in Puerto Rico, the Lesser Antilles, and Hispaniola. However, it will lose stabilization and strength as it moves through these areas.

Central Florida is predicted to be lying directly in this wave’s projected pathway, allowing it to gain strength through Florida’s warm waters.

If this wave becomes a tropical depression with winds of 38 mph, it is more likely to form into a tropical storm with winds ranging from 39-73 mph.

The possible formation of this tropical storm could result in “Chantal”, the third named storm of the year.

The National Hurricane Center will continue to keep us updated on the  formation of this storm and the next update will occur today at 2pm.
