Most Decorated American Gymnast to address YMCA Prayer Breakfast

BOCA RATON — Shannon Miller, the most decorated gymnast in American history, will be the keynote speaker at the 11th annual YMCA of South Palm Beach County Prayer Breakfast to be held Tuesday, March 12 at the Boca Resort and Club from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

The event is a morning of fellowship and fun – strengthening community while fundraising for the Y’s Financial Assistance Program, which allows everyone, regardless of income, the ability to participate in Y programs through scholarships.

Miller, a US Olympic gymnast who led the “Magnificent Seven” to the US Women’s first-ever Team Gold in 1996, remains the most decorated gymnast in American history.  She is the only female athlete to be inducted into the US Olympic Hall of Fame twice (Individual 2006 and Team 2008) and the only American to rank among the Top 10 All-Time Gymnasts.

The event will also honor long-time Y supporter, Henrietta, Countess De Hoernle, whose contributions as a Y board member and trustee have helped build the Child Development and Youth Center at the Peter Blum Family YMCA of Boca Raton.

The 2013 volunteer chairperson for the prayer breakfast is Linda Spielmann – a 16-year breast cancer survivor who used the wellness center at the Peter Blum Family YMCA in Boca Raton to regain her strength. Linda has a powerful personal connection to the Y, having been a member with her husband and children for over 20 years. She explained, “The YMCA represents all that is important to our local communities and not only provides quality programs and facilities to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, but most importantly, it is a family.”

The event committee includes:  Trina Chin Cheong, Rebecca Coleman, Trish Dawes, Lindsey Donoff, Lisa Elkan, Alex Farnsworth, Kirk Francis, Sheila Gabel, Kim Gramm, Teresa Harrington, Gwen Horasan, Bill Horneck, Megan Keenan, Kery Knutson, Kathy Lockard, Beth Miller, Kay Mueller, Mariagnes Murray, Jillian Percella, Georgia Rose and Pamela Roulan.

The Prayer Breakfast is the largest annual fundraiser for the YMCA of South Palm Beach County. This year’s emcee is CBS 12 news anchor Liz Quirantes who was recently named 2012 Hispanic Woman of Distinction for South Florida.
