FAU’s Peace Studies Program presents lecture by James Finley

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic University’s Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World series will present James Finley, Ph.D., with a lecture on “Childlike Acceptance as A Path to Inner Peace” Thursday, February 17 at 7 p.m.

James Finley, Ph.D

Finley, a former student of Catholic monk Thomas Merton, will talk about using contemplation and meditation to sustain us and find inner peace. The lecture will take place in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or 800-564-9539. FAU students, faculty and staff may attend for free. Group tickets are available.

At the age of 18, Finley became a monk at the cloistered Trappist monastery of the Abbey of Gethsemani where the world-renowned monk and author Thomas Merton was his spiritual director. Merton studied Eastern meditation techniques and is credited with reviving an interest in Christian meditation. After six years, Finley left the monastery and went on to earn degrees from the University of Akron, Saint John College and the Fuller Theological Seminary.

Finley now leads retreats and workshops throughout the United States and Canada. He speaks to people from all religious traditions who seek a way to have a more peaceful mind and heart. Finley is also a clinical psychologist in private practice. His books include Merton’s Palace of Nowhere, The Contemplative Hearts and Christian Meditation: Experiencing the Presence of God.
