Two Master Naturalist Courses Will Be Offered in Person

Miramar Pineland

Broward County, FL – Nature lovers, environmental enthusiasts, and professional natural resource managers are invited to enroll in two live classes as part of Broward County’s Florida Master Naturalist Program. The programs will be offered in late September and early October at Miramar Pineland (3600 S University Dr., Miramar 33025; 954-357-8776).

The first course will be Habitat Evaluation, which runs from September 20th through September 29th, consisting of 24 contact hours. This intensive field course will teach you the latest in formal sampling protocols, with opportunities to participate in Citizen Science by measuring terrestrial and aquatic plant diversity. Students will work in teams to record and analyze data that will be used by the Parks Environmental Management Group.

The second course, Wildlife Monitoring, begins on October 3rd and concludes on October 9th. The 24 contact hours will be spent learning the latest protocols in sampling diurnal and nocturnal, terrestrial and freshwater wildlife with cutting-edge techniques and equipment. Students in this class will also conduct Citizen Science in their capture, calculation, and interpretation of data for management.

Both 24-contact-hour classes will be taught by wildlife and marine biologist Kristen Hoss of Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA), and tropical botanist and professor Dr. John Pipoly of Broward County Parks. These longtime teaching partners have a wealth of professional experience both in the classroom and in the field and are known for their innovative, experiential courses.
