The mother of singer Keyshia Cole has passed away. According to Essence, Cole’s younger sister confirmed the news of their mother’s death on Instagram. Essence and TMZ report that Cole’s brother stated their mother relapsed and overdosed at her home on July 18 while celebrating her birthday.

A year ago, Cole confirmed that her mother Lons was struggling with drugs, checked into rehab, and would have been there for 30 days in February.

In an Instagram post, Cole writes: “Do you believe in the power of love? What about lack thereof? 50/50 There’s strength in knowing there’s something or someone you can always lean back on. Someone to catch u when u fall. I’ve been being strong for you, hoping I’ll get a chance to feel that feeling from you.”

Cole and her sister, Neffeteria, have not yet publicly commented on the news. In Cole’s reality series on BET in 2019, Lons and Cole talk about the possibility of Lons not being around. “You have to live for you and your family not nobody else. You don’t have to do nothin’ but die and pay taxes, but you have to move on if anything happens to me. At the end of the day, you’ll see me later. Up there,” said Lons.

“I’m a be always where you can find me. Even when God calls me. A mother’s love will always protect you,” added Lons.
