Health officials can confirm that an Indian River County food service worker has tested positive for hepatitis A.
The individual was working Pizza Mia, located at 1115 21st St. in Vero Beach, when he was recently diagnosed with the disease.
WPTV warns, customers could have been exposed to the contagious virus between July 19 and July 23.
If you or someone you know, ate at Pizza Mia during that time period, health officials emphasize the importance of getting the hep A vaccine immediately in order to provide protection following the exposure.
So, could this pose a new threat for us in Palm Beach County?
The Florida Department of Health has presented the following number of hepatitis A cases in our area as of July 27:
- Palm Beach County: 42
- Martin County: 32
- St. Lucie County: 26
- Okeechobee County: 6
- Indian River County: 4
Symptoms include:
- Abdominal discomfort
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dark urine
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Pale white stools
- Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
If you are experiencing these symptoms, you must seek medical attention as soon as possible.
The Florida Surgeon General declared a hepatitis A public health emergency this past Thursday. In doing so, the state is allowed to allocate more resources in preventing the virus from spreading.
