A Record Breaking Nesting Season For Sea Turtles in Florida

Citizens are encouraged to continue being mindful and limit plastic consumption as sea turtle nests in Juno Beach hit a record high.

The Loggerhead Marine life Center has recorded 19,580 nests and counting just this year, the last record breaking nesting season was recorded in 2017 at 19,085 nests.

Because sea turtles do not start nesting till their adult stage of 30 years old, WPTV reflects on the success of conservation efforts beginning a while back.

Dr. Justin Perrault, MC director of research, made a statement to WPTV that we must continue with our efforts, “We have to remind ourselves that there is still much work to be done to combat existing threats to sea turtles, including reducing plastic pollution, assessing habitat loss, and improving water quality.”

With 3 months left of nesting season, which ends on October 31, we are expected to see the number of nests continue to grow.
