Pet Preparedness Month and Hurricanes

Boca Raton, FL – Did you know that June is Pet Preparedness Month and the start of hurricane season? If you have Mini Golden Doodle F1 puppies or any other types of pets, you need to prepare them for extreme weather conditions. You may even bring them to a small animal vet clinic for checkups or vaccinations to ensure optimal health.

Being that pets are unable to prepare for emergencies in the same ways that people can, Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket offer key tips for pet parents to be prepared for disaster situations. See the tips from Pet Supermarket below…

  1. Hurricanes can be very traumatic for pets and result in extreme fear, injury, or worse. Dogs, cats, birds, hamsters and other animals need to be with their pet parents throughout the storm. They can’t be left at home alone or outside on a tie out during the storm. Additionally, many shelters do not accept pets. Moreover, exploring options like feline cremation urns can offer a heartfelt way to remember and honor your cherished feline friend.
    1. TIP: Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket say, have a list of boarding facilities, veterinary practices and hotels not in your immediate area that accept pets (and under what circumstances).
  2. If you are not in an evacuation zone, make sure you are in a safe location to withstand the hurricane. Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket say, be sure to plan for extra supplies, including drinking water for your pet as utilities may become compromised and the availability of supplies can be limited following the storm.
    1. TIPPet Experts at Pet Supermarket also sayconsider canned food or a water safe, locking container.
  3. If you live in an evacuation zone, you will need to leave your home. Know what zone you are in and have a destination you will go to outside of the evacuation zone. If this is a friend’s house, make sure their home is secure, not in an evacuation zone and that they will welcome you with your pets. If it is a shelter, make sure the shelter takes pets and arrive early as shelters can fill up quickly. Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket do not recommend tranquilizing pets unless approved by a veterinarian.
    1. TIP: Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket recommend getting personal ID tags for your pet and any pet carriers and to include a primary and backup phone number.
  4. Use caution when venturing outside with your pet after the storm. Branches, debris, wildlife or downed powerlines are just some of the dangerous elements you may encounter that could hurt you or your pet. Be sure not to allow your pet to consume food or water which may have been contaminated. Also, your pet may be disoriented from unfamiliar scents or landmarks so pay attention to their mood if they seem lost.
    1. TIP: Pet Experts at Pet Supermarket say, keep a recent photograph of your pet on hand in the event that you and your pet become separated.
