- It appears Boca Raton residents are satisfied with their elected leadership as no one has indicated they will challenge the incumbents in next year’s election. Although we are five months away from the March 13 municipal election, Council members Jeremy Rodgers and Robert Weinroth could likely retain their seats on the dais as no one has yet thrown a hat in the race. If someone was planning to run for one of the seats, he or she would need to start raising money now unless they plan to finance the campaign out of pocket or has a secret army of big check writers waiting in the wings. The official qualifying period for candidates begins at 8 a.m. Jan. 2 and ends at 5 p.m. Jan. 10. Weinroth, who recently held a campaign kickoff event, has been ramping up his campaign war chest before he announced his plans to seek reelection. He filed on June 1 for a full three-year term. To date, he has raised more than $60,000, of which nearly $26,000 was brought in this period, according to his most recent report. Rodgers has raised about $20,000, which includes a $5,000 loan to himself.
- Congratulations are in order to local resident Christel Silver who has been appointed as 2018 National Association of Realtors President’s Liaison to Germany. Silver, the broker/owner of Silver International Realty, will be responsible for strengthening existing relationships and creating new opportunities within their assigned country. The goal is to promote the Realtor brand through International membership, education, products, services, and networking events as well as to drive business to Realtors. This is Silver’s second tour of duty as she served as the President’s Liaison to Germany from 2010 to 2014. Silver grew up in Germany and worked at the Justice Department for 17 years prior to coming to the United States.
- The Fairfield Inn & Suites near the Boca Raton airport is getting a new director of sales. Jenny Mazzurco, who has more than 20 years of experience, will be responsible for maintaining guest satisfaction and for the total sales efforts for the hotel, which includes developing and maintaining new accounts, supervising sales related personnel, and implementing sales and marketing strategies to maximize profits. Mazzurco was the senior sales manager at the Hyatt House in White Plains, a 159-room property where she led the sales team and often assisted at other properties. The pet and motor coach friendly Fairfield Inn & Suites includes 95 guestrooms, 24 suites, fitness center, outdoor swimming pool, whirlpool, complimentary breakfast, free high-speed internet access, and flexible meeting space.
- Kudos also go to the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, West Palm Beach Alumnae Chapter, for presenting an outstanding EMBODI “My Brothers and Me” Youth Symposium and Career Fair recently at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach. The event featured about a dozen high-powered black professionals who imparted knowledge and nuggets for life to about 50 teenage black boys. Among the presenters were former President of Pratt Whitney Hansel Tookes, Dr. Roger L. Duncan, III, President of the T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society and Andrei Rolle, president and field representative of Local Union1652. The program was honored twice with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority’s National Program, Planning and Development Community Service Award. With the quality of this year’s program, I am confident it will again be worthy of the recognition.
