Preparing for Irma: Must-have Hurricane Supplies

With the threat of Hurricane Irma looming in the Atlantic, South Florida has already begun preparing for the possibility of the hurricane making landfall in South Florida over the weekend and early next week. Below is a list of essential supplies you must have in your home in case the storm heads our way:

  • Cash (ATMs may not work after the storm)
  • Cell phone
  • External Battery to charge your phone
  • Drinking water (7 gallons per person)
  • Prescription medicine, (2-week supply)
  • Books, magazines, and toys
  • Ice chest and ice
  • Disposable plates, glasses, and utensils
  • Manual can opener
  • Battery-operated TV/radio and clock
  • Spare batteries
  • Flashlights/lanterns
  • Toilet paper
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Baby food/formula
  • First Aid Kit
  • Plastic sheeting/tarp
  • Duct or masking tape
  • Nails, rope, lumber, tools
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Insect repellent, sunscreen
  • Battery-operated fans
  • Disinfectant
  • Soap and detergent
  • Bleach for sterilization (unscented with hypochlorite, the only active ingredient)
  • Tincture of iodine, or water purification tablets
  • Rain gear
  • Fire extinguisher

Non-Perishable Foods

  • Powered milk, evaporated milk or Parmalat milk
