The east coast of Florida is still very much in the forecast cone as Hurricane Irma continues to move closer to the state.
As of the 5 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is still a strong Category 5 with 185 mph sustained winds. It is currently in the process of passing by the U.S. Virgin Islands, while the eye is staying just north of Puerto Rico.
If the storm continues on its predicted route, South Florida could expect to see tropical storm force winds by Saturday evening, before potentially feeling Category 4 hurricane force winds if it makes landfall.
Florida is still not under any hurricane watches or warnings, however that could change by tomorrow morning.
Mayor Susan Haynie signed an Emergency Declaration for the City of Boca Raton earlier today which will allow staff to streamline procedures, resulting in faster response times in utilizing things such as supplies and funds.
“Boca Raton is prepared to respond to this storm effectively with experienced staff, state of the art equipment and dedicated volunteers,” Mayor Haynie said. “We have all the necessary preparations and procedures in place to begin recovery and assistant efforts and reinstate city services as soon as possible.”
Garbage pickup is still expected to happen through Friday, however it is not advised to begin any major construction projects or tree trimming. Any debris or garbage left outside after Friday will not be picked up and will need to be secured.
All Palm Beach County Schools are closed Thursday and Friday. Other school closures include Florida Atlantic University (Thursday-Sunday), Lynn University (Thursday-Friday) and Palm Beach State College (Thursday-Sunday).
