Boca Police Ask Motorists to Move Over

By Kathryn Wohlpart

Florida drivers are required to move over, leaving a full lane between their car and a “protected vehicle” or slow down if they are unable to move over. The Move Over Law was made to protect police, fire, EMS, tow trucks, sanitation and utility vehicles when they are stopped on the side of the road.

Boca Raton Police Services is partnering with Boca Raton Fire and Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office, FAU Police, Boca Raton Utilities and FDOT to raise awareness.

“The message is for motorists to move over when they see any of the protected vehicles on the side of the road.  If they cannot move over they need to slow down 20 mph under the posted speed limit (if the speed limit is 25 or lower they need to slow down to 5 mph).  This is for the safety of all involved,” said Boca Raton Public Information Officer Sandra Boonenberg.

The movement is  community to prevent deaths and injuries that occur as a result of accidents from drivers clipping emergency vehicles.

Cards will be handed out with information on the law and changes made to the law. A Twitter hashtag, #MoveOver, has been created to get information out via social media.
