Lynn’s Schmidt Earns First Career Shutout

Lynn University’s men’s soccer team improved to 4-0 on Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Lee University. Max Schmidt logged his first career shutout in net for the Fighting Knights while handing the Flames (3-1-1) their first loss of the season. Nicolas Mortensen netted his second goal of the season while James Casserly earned the assist.

Lynn had an opportunity in the 41st minute when Oliver Powers was taken down by Lee’s defender Gabe Franco in the box, resulting in a red card for Lee and a penalty kick for the Fighting Knights. Chris Hellmann’s penalty kick deflected off the hands of the Flames’ goalkeeper Tom Halsall and hit the right post. Despite Lynn edging Lee 11-1 in first-half shots, the two teams headed remained scoreless at halftime.

Lynn held possession for majority of the second half as Lee was playing down a player due to Franco’s ejection. Mortensen’s goal came in the 67th minute when James Casserly found him eight yards in front of Lee’s keeper. The Flames had several opportunities in the final ten minutes penetrating Lynn’s defense while firing off four shots in the final half. The Fighting

Knights battled to until the final horn to earn their fourth straight win.

Schmidt made three saves in goal while Lee’s goalkeeper stopped six shots from the Blue & White. The Fighting Knights totaled 16 shots in the match and held Lee to just five. Lynn held a slight 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, four of which came in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
