TEDxBocaRaton GuestsBy Staci Garcia

Boca Raton’s first TEDx event was an overwhelming success, according to attendees and speakers. Friday May 9th, Florida Atlantic University was the place to hear “ideas worth spreading” and learn, share and discuss.

TedxBocaRaton kicked off with a VIP reception the night before at The Baldwin House where speakers and guests were greeted by FAU’s President Dr. John W. Kelly.  After Dr. Kelly’s warm introduction, Mayor Susan Haynie welcomed TedxBocaRaton and spoke about “vision in action.”

Friday morning, attendees were welcomed with interesting and creative outdoor activities, breakfast and the opportunity to make connections.

TedxBocaRaton’s mission to “connect attendees with a unique collection of talks that will stimulate dialogue, engage the audience and develop ideas at the local level” was evident from the moment that the event started. Host Kandee G encouraged guests to take out their cell phones and put them on silent but share, share, share!

Attendees packed the house of FAU’s University Theatre for a speaker line- up that included five minute talks ranging from bullying, Alzheimer’s, fitness, music, global warming, sales, pollution, renewable energy, origami, the internet and lying. TedxBocaRaton delivered a diverse array of topics and speakers. There was no shortage of discussion during the two break periods.

Singer/songwriter Teri Catlin received a standing ovation after her moving and inspiring performance.  Music can heal and sharing the message through music is healing.

Corrine Lasmezas spoke about Alheimer’s in such a way that anyone could understand the science behind the disease.

Brad Short spoke about finding your intuition through movement and parkour.

FAU’s own Dr. Kevin Wagner spoke about why Google knows everything about politics and you don’t.

The day closed when local musician Randi Fishenfeld spoke to the audience through her violin and her blues and Klezmer music.  TedxBocaRaton delivered “talks that blow your mind!”  Following the event was a short reception and opportunity to meet the speakers.

Organizers promise to deliver another TedxBocaRaton and thanked their all-volunteer staff for doing a stellar job on their inaugural event.

The complete list of speakers is available online and the entire event will soon be available to view on www.TedxBocaRaton.com.
