Dedicated Youth Volunteer Inspires Students at Eagles Landing Middle School

Sarah-PalumboBy Vickie Middlebrooks

The School District of Palm Beach County has many outstanding student volunteers but Sarah Palumbo is one who stands out in the crowd.

Whether it is assisting students at Eagles Landing Middle School, helping administration, attending both SAC and board meetings, volunteering at the local elementary school, or mentoring a local Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics Enhancement (SECME) team, Sarah does it all. The former Eagles Landing student does it all with a selfless nature of simply just wanting to do what is right.

“We are thrilled to have Sarah come back to assist with so many of the projects that she herself participated in while she was a student at Eagles Landing,” principal Cynthia Chiapetta said. “It is particularly impressive since she carries such a rigorous class load at FAU high school.”

She designed a program called Kids in Need, which addresses multiple needs within the school and the community that focuses on student and child centered needs. The group started at the beginning of the school year by collecting back packs and supplies. KIN ran a toy drive during the holidays and collected more than 650 toys for Toys for Tots, school official said. They also ran a book drive during Literacy Month and collected more than 200 books for a local elementary school.

Sarah also tutors students and worked on the “Green” Committee at the school and in the school’s outdoor learning center. She is a student representative on the School Advisory Council and a student affairs liaison of the Parent Teacher Student Association. Sarah was awarded the 2012/13 Palm Beach County PTA Student Ambassador award.

“Sarah is truly an inspiration and role model to our middle schoolers,” Chiapetta said.
