DELRAY BEACH – Fire investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed an 86-year-old man and his cat early Monday morning in a Delray Beach house fire.

Firefighters found the man’s body in the master bedroom after the fire was extinguished around 1:30 a.m., said Cpt. Kevin Saxton, Delray Beach Fire-Rescue public information officer.  Investigators have withheld the name of the man until they can notify his next of kin.

The dead cat was also found inside the residence, Saxton said.

Firefighters responded to a call to the house on Riviera Drive in Rainberry Estates shortly before 12:45 a.m. after a smoke detector triggered a call to authorities, Saxton said.

Crews found an extensive blaze with flames burning through the home’s roof, officials said. Firefighters couldn’t enter the home until the fire was brought under control about 1:30 a.m., Saxton said.

The victim was the only one in the structure at the time of the fire, said Saxton.  The roof of the home was partially collapsed, making the house unlivable.
