Boca Raton, FL – The crime occurred on Friday, July 6, 2012, in the 400 block of NE 43rd Street. The victim was gone from his home for less than two hours and was unaware anything was amiss until he received a call from his credit card company alerting him to unusual activity. When the victim checked his home, he found that a rear window had been pried open. The credit card was missing, as well as a laptop computer, watches, loose change, and some sports memorabilia.
During the timeframe the crime was committed, a neighbor reported seeing a male hide an object about the size of a VCR in the bushes. A responding Boca Raton Police officer checked the bushes, but didn’t find anything hidden. The officer made contact with Shane Cashman, who matched the description of the suspicious male. Cashman said he lives in the area and was carrying laundry bags.
Detectives investigating the crime checked Cashman’s name in a regional property database and discovered he pawned a baseball autographed by Ted Williams. Detectives went to a nearby Publix, where the victim’s credit card was used and obtained video. The officer who spoke with Cashman the day of the burglary viewed the video and identified the person using the victim’s credit card as Cashman. The detective then went to the pawn shop where the baseball had been pawned and confirmed that it belonged to the victim. The pawn receipt reflected Cashman’s information and the clerk’s description of the suspect matched Cashman. Detectives located three watches Cashman pawned at various pawn shops.
On Wednesday, July 18, Cashman met with detectives at the Police Department. Cashman admitted to the burglary, using the victim’s credit card and pawning his belongings. Cashman is charged with burglary to an unoccupied dwelling, grand theft, and fraudulent use of a credit card.
