Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, as the campus address for Jewish college students at Florida Atlantic University, deplores the actions of the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), which posted falsified eviction notices on 200 student dormitory doors. There is an appropriate method for expression of opinions, but deception is NOT acceptable. Appropriate measures must be taken to assure that the expression of viewpoints is done in such a manner that no student is intimidated or deceived in the future.
Hillel holds dear the value that one can vigorously support the right of free speech but in this situation, lines were crossed. It is the position of Hillel that the placement of these notices is an affront to the right of every student to feel safe and secure in their university community.
Hillel will always respond to efforts to delegitimize and demonize Israel. Students for Justice in Palestine is a student group that directly supports the goals of the “Boycott Divestment and Sanctions” or BDS movement and negates Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State. Hillel will continue to actively educate and advocate to the University community about the Middle East’s only democracy and America’s strong ally, the State of Israel.
