FAU exhibition features photography by Boys & Girls Clubs of PBC

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic University’s University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present an exhibition featuring photography by children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County on Friday, March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., which includes an opening reception, and Saturday, March 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Ritter Art Gallery on the Boca Raton campus.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County members, ages 6 to 17, learn photography skills and take photographs during scheduled club field trips within the community. This annual exhibition is part of the organization’s participation in a national photography competition.

“Photography helps build confidence as the children discover their hidden artistic skills,” said Dennis Young, director of computer education for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, who directs the project with Anton Spalding, core technology specialist.

“Many of the participants have never touched a camera before. In the five years we have been providing the program, the young photographers get better and more creative. The photos are truly amazing.”

More than 7,500 children participate in the Boys & Girls Clubs program at one of 13 clubhouses throughout Palm Beach County.

The Boys & Girls Club is the county’s largest not-for-profit youth development organization dedicated to serving youth from 6 to 18 years of age, particularly those from disadvantaged circumstances.

The project is being hosted at FAU by the University Galleries Museum Education Program, a program that engages FAU art students in providing art education services through interactive tours of exhibitions.
