Lynn University hikes tuition 2.7 percent for next school year; maintains freeze on student fees

BOCA RATON — The Board of Trustees at Lynn University approved the school’s 2011-12 tuition rates in December. Raising tuition by only 2.7 percent for day undergraduate students, this increase is well below the recent national average for the fifth consecutive year, trustees noted.

“Lynn University is continuing its commitment to cost control for our students and their parents by again approving tuition rate increase that is well below the national average,” Lynn president and board member Kevin M. Ross said. “In addition to this modest increase and our continued freezes on student fee increases and room and board rates, we are also committed to making a Lynn education affordable through financial aid.”

Each year, Lynn gives $12.7 million in financial aid to more than 72% of its students.

Also, for the seventh year running, Lynn’s board elected not to raise student activity fees, and as it did for the past two academic years, the board also froze room and board rates.

Lynn’s undergraduate tuition for 2011-12 will be $30,200 for students beginning in the fall of 2011, up from $29,400 for this year. Rates for evening undergraduate students will increase by 3.3 percent next year to $315 per credit hour. Master’s students will see a $15 increase per credit hour (from $605 to $620), a 2.5 percent increase.

The student service/activity fee at Lynn will remain at its 2004 rate of $1,000 next year. The technology fee of $500 for resident students and $150 for commuters has not been raised since before 2000.

According to “Trends in College Pricing 2010,” released on Oct. 28 by the College Board, the average increase in tuition for private nonprofit four-year institutions like Lynn for the 2010-11 academic year was 4.5 percent, and room and board rates rose by an average of 3.9 percent.

Comparatively, Lynn’s tuition rates rose by 2.8 percent in 2010-11, and will only increase by 2.7 percent for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year.

In addition, room and board rates at Lynn have remained flat since 2009.
