Golf tournament honoring Boca murder victim to aid Food for the Poor

BOCA RATON – The fourth annual Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of Cynthia Moffett, the Boca Raton woman who was murdered March 23, 2006, will be held Saturday, March 13 at 1 p.m. at Boca Raton County Club, 17751 Boca Club Boulevard, it was announced by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

Proceeds will benefit Food for the Poor.

PBSO said Moffett was shot and killed while working at the Forest Oaks Golf Club at 144 Lucerne Lakes Boulevard in Lake Worth.   Investigators said her body was discovered on the ground just outside the south door of the golf pro shop.  She was shot twice in the upper torso.

Detectives said they believe she was shot between 5 and 6 p.m. during the course of a robbery.  The subject or subjects left the pro shop with wrapped coins and a number of the coins were found a distance from the pro shop.

In connection with the anniversary of her shooting, the family issued the following statement:

“This dear friend, mother and grandmother was murdered in a senseless act of violence four years ago. Her story has since aired on ‘America’s Most Wanted,’ but tragically, the case remains unsolved.”

“Cindy was extremely involved in her local church, St. Jude’s, where she was a Eucharistic Minister and a devout volunteer always willing to donate her time, herself and her life. She was vital to the “Journey to Justice” program and also tutored immigrant day laborers in English.”

“Her memory lives on during our annual golf tournament and serves as a memorial to a loving, kind, compassionate, generous and adventurous spirit.”

To date, Food for the Poor has purchased, packaged and shipped more than 3,100 tons of emergency relief to the earthquake victims in Haiti. The agency has been working there for more than 24 years and plans on providing humanitarian aid to the country as long as it is necessary and is now focused on providing relief and rebuilding homes and schools.

This interdenominational Christian agency also provides emergency relief assistance, clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and micro-enterprise development assistance, with more than 96 percent of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
