FAU to host ‘Hoops for Haiti’ to aid Lynn University Food for the Poor

BOCA RATON – The Student Government organizations from Florida Atlantic University and Lynn University have joined together to host a “Hoops for Haiti” benefit basketball game in association with the Harlem Ambassadors Friday, February 19 at 6:15 p

.m. at the FAU Arena on the Boca Raton campus.

The event is free and open to the public; however, a monetary or food donation is requested. Attendees can donate money to the Lynn University Haiti Crisis Fund, as well as money and/or canned food to Food for the Poor.

“The FAU community wanted to reach out and help Lynn University in some way in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake,” said Tiffany Weimar, president of FAU’s Student Government. “In honor of the students and professors missing from Lynn, as well as the FAU students that were indirectly affected by the earthquake, the university felt this was an ideal way to reach out and help.”

The comedy-style basketball game will feature the Harlem Ambassadors organization versus a “celebrity” team of players, including ESPN 760/WPTV Newschannel 5 sports anchor Evan Cohen; Craig Angelos, FAU athletics director; as well as Dr. Robert Watson, associate professor of America studies at Lynn University, among others.

“We are deeply appreciative and moved by Florida Atlantic University’s dedication and altruism toward the people of Haiti,” said Mohamed Abdalla, president of Lynn University’s Student Government. “We hope that our partnership will inspire the unison of other institutions in support of Haiti.”

Pre-game entertainment by local musical artists will begin at 5:30 p.m. The event also is sponsored by Konbit Kreyol of FAU and the Fairfield Inn by Marriot.
