Boca police probe robbery, shooting at bank

BOCA RATON – Boca Raton police continue to investigate a bank robbery and shooting that occurred at Florida Capital Bank, 1801 South Federal Highway around 6 p.m. Friday.

Police said the female manager was shot in the abdomen area while struggling with the gunman.  She was taken to Delray Medical Center, where she was reported in stable condition.

“The suspect entered the bank brandishing a handgun and ordered the employees into the bank’s safe,” said police Public Information Officer Sandra Boonenberg.

“While in the safe, a struggle took place between the bank manager and the suspect.  The suspect fired his gun, striking the bank manager in her abdomen area.”

Boonenberg said that following the struggle, the robber fled with an undetermined amount of money.  He is described as a male around 5’5” tall, 135 pounds.  Police said he was wearing a black ski mask, black hooded sweatshirt, shiny sneakers and black gloves.  He fled west carrying a dark bag.

Boca Raton Crime Scene Technicians are actively examining evidence from the scene, Boonenberg said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Scott Hanley at 561-338-1344 or Crime Stoppers at 800-458-TIPS.
