Boca Raton, FL - Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball will host the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday, January 4, at 7 p.m., in the FAU Arena, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. FAU and ULM are currently two of four Sun Belt Conference (SBC) teams undefeated in the league.
The Owls’ 2-0 start came from double-digit road victories at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State University. Those wins improved the team’s record to 7-6, marking the first time since November 25 that the squad has had above a .500 mark. FAU is seeking its first 3-0 conference start since the 2002-03 season.
“We’re looking forward to starting the home Sun Belt Conference season after playing well during the recent road trip,” said Chancellor Dugan, FAU’s head women’s basketball coach. “Starting the league schedule with two road wins is something that we can build on for the rest of the season. It has been a total-team effort, offensively and defensively. Hopefully, those efforts will carry over to our play against a strong ULM team.”
Sophomore forward Chenise Millerposted the Owls’ first double-double performance of the season by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds against Louisiana-Lafayette on December 31. Overall, she is averaging 9.7 points a game and ranks fourth in the SBC by grabbing 7.8 rebounds per contest.
Senior guard Teri Stamps scored 15 of her season-best 18 points in the second half at ULL. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native is scoring 9.5 points per outing and leads the team with 20 steals. Senior post player April Goinsis coming off a 12-point outing and is averaging seven points and five rebounds a game.
Sophomore guard Latavia Dempsey continues to lead the team in scoring at 10 points per contest and has made a team-high 23 three-point field goals while coming off the bench. Another key reserve player has been senior forward Vontrice Dennis, who has averaged five points and 3.8 rebounds during the past four games since returning from a preseason injury.
Improved defensive play and rebounding have been key factors in the Owls’ recent successes. The team held Arkansas State to a season-low 44 points on December 29 and held Louisiana-Lafayette scoreless for an eight-minute stretch of the second half to pull away for the victory.
ULM stands 4-11 on the season and has won its last three games. The Warhawks are coming off an 83-57 win over Arkansas State on December 31. That win came after picking up a 53-49 triumph over Western Kentucky University on December 29. Both league victories have come at home. Larrie Williams leads the team by scoring 15.9 points per game, while Elizabeth Torres is scoring at a 9.8-point clip and leads the team with 89 assists.
