Boca Raton Tribune a proud supporter of March of Dimes

By: Douglas Heizer

It’s been a long hot summer, and not many of us have given thought to the season of galas that begins this fall.

The Boca Raton Tribune is proud to be taking part again this year in the March of Dimes Signature Chefs Auction.  It’s a great event that will help a good cause, and we here at the Tribune are looking forward to it.

Signature Chef Auction Chairs Jason & Jaclyn Brodie and Joshua & Marcy Friedman of Brodie & Friedman PA have already announced that the 6th Annual Signature Chefs Auction will be held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club Sept. 9 from 6:30 to 10 p.m.

The event begins with a VIP reception for sponsors and chefs until 7:30 p.m. The ballroom doors will then open for the signature event which will include a great selection of wines and spirits, samplings of food prepared by the Signature Chefs, and special auction dining packages.

The organization will also present its 2011 March of Dimes Champions Award to Rosemary & Ben Krieger to recognize their outstanding support of March of Dimes and their mission to give every baby a healthy start. The time, energy, and support they have given make a profound difference in the lives of many babies and their families.

New duties for famed football coach

We have all been looking forward to the 2011 Florida Atlantic University football season with rapt anticipation.  For the first time in its history, FAU’s Fighting Owls will be playing home games in an on-campus stadium.  The first home game in the Boca Raton-based grid arena is Oct. 15.

But we recently found out that FAU’ s legendary Head Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger will retire after the 2011 football season. After the season’s finale, he will focus his energy full-time on continuing to generate support for the new FAU stadium, as well as for athletics and the university as a whole.

We can think of no one better to do that.  It’s just that he will be missed along the sidelines at FAU games.

Also, Howard has been one of the loudest cheerleaders calling for an on-campus football stadium, and it’s a shame he will only have one season to play in the newly construction, 30,000 seat facility.

Even before he arrived at FAU, Schnellenberger, now 77, was a legendary football coach at both the professional and college level. He previously held head coaching positions with the University of Oklahoma, University of Louisville, University of Miami, where he won a national championship, and the Baltimore Colts. He has also worked extensively as an assistant coach at the college and pro levels, including as part of the staff of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. Schnellenberger is also famous for recruiting Joe Namath to the University of Alabama for Bear Bryant in 1961.

Schnellenberger, the only head coach in the FAU football program’s existence, welcomed the idea of bringing football to FAU in 1998 and has been the driving force behind the Owls. Since 2001, the team has had eight All-Americans, three National Player of the Week honorees, two bowl victories, two bowl MVPs, one defensive MVP, one Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, one preseason Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year and one Sun Belt Conference title.

Way to go, Howard!
