Spady Museum adds two new members to EPOCH board

DELRAY BEACH — Dr. Barbara Shuler of Delray Beach and Dr. Talbert O. Shaw of Boca Raton were recently named to the board of Expanding and Preserving Our Cultural Heritage (EPOCH), Inc., which operates the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum, Delray Beach.

“We are thrilled with the addition of these two outstanding individuals, who have made their marks in the world of business and education,” said Vera Farrington, EPOCH founder and president. “Both bring tremendous resources, insights and experience to the board, as the Spady Cultural Heritage Museum grows in new and exciting directions that will benefit from their support.”

Dr. Shuler is the owner/CEO of Shuler’s Memorial Chapel, Inc., a black family-owned business, located in Delray Beach and Mangonia Park. The business was founded in 1985 by her late husband, James Lamar Shuler.

After receiving a B.A. degree from Florida A&M University, Dr. Shuler received a Master’s degree from Ohio State University, a Specialist degree from the University of Miami and a Doctorate degree from the University of Florida.

She served as a public school teacher, a university professor, an assistant superintendent for Dade County Public Schools and was chairperson of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

Dr. Shaw is an ordained SDA minister and has been pastor of several churches in Jamaica and Nassau, Bahamas. He served as assistant professor of religion for Oakwood College, professor of ethics and society at Howard University, professor of philosophy and religion at Morgan State University and as a visiting professor at Bowie State University, Catholic University of America, Princeton University and the University of the District of Columbia.

A graduate of West Indies College/Northern Caribbean University, he earned his B.A., M.A. and B.D. degrees from Andrews University in Michigan and his Master’s and Doctorate degrees from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Shaw has held numerous board and administrative positions. His authored works include “East of Eden” by Pilgrim Press and “The Reagan Caribbean Basin Initiative: Genuine or Deceptive,” co-written with Glenn Phillips.
