Sea Turtle Release Thursday Boca Raton

Boca Raton, FL – On Thursday, October 17, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is releasing a 350 lb. adult female green sea turtle named Yamato.  Yamato was found on the beach in Boca Raton on July 7.  She suffered from partial paralysis due to an injury received from a boat strike.  She was full of eggs, and our sea turtle rehabilitation team, led by Whitney Crowder, Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Coordinator, administered oxytocin and elevated the front of her body to assist Yamato in laying her eggs.

Yamato now has movement in her rear flippers and is ready to return to the ocean.   She is being fitted with a satellite transmitter so we can track her movements after release (https://www.gumbolimbo.org/satellite-tracking).  She will be released on the beach near the center tunnel in Spanish River Park in Boca Raton (3001 N State Road A1A) at 4:30 pm.  The release is free and open to the public.  Beach parking fees will be waived beginning at 4:00 pm.
