Boca Raton Students Dream Green Thanks to FAU Pine Jog and ULIEA Award

Boca Raton, FL – The Green Schools Recognition Program, established by FAU Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, recognizes public and private schools that instill a culture of environmental stewardship in their classrooms and community.

FAU Pine Jog will be able to increase the scope of their offerings including the Green Schools Recognition Program, due to them recently being named the grand prize winner of the UL Innovative Education Award. The UL Innovative Education Award will donate $100,000 and a slew of resources to FAU Pine Jog, ensuring their E-STEM mission continues for years to come.

This award hits close to home, as Boca Raton Community High School led by teacher Rachel Wellman, is a shining star in the Green Schools Recognition Program.

Wellman, the 2018 Green Teacher of the Year, leads the student in various green and E-STEM activities including:

  • Creating a high-tech garden and building an aquaponics system
  • Harvesting and donating vegetables to Boca Helping Hands
  • Writing grants to purchase recycling bins for classrooms
  • Installing water bottle refill stations
  • Traveling to Peru to teach locals about aquaponics

All participating schools receive professional development and support from FAU Pine Jog, including guidance with the application process and professional development opportunities through Pine Jog’s Learn Green Institute.
