2019 Gumbo Limbo 10K Raises $34,000 to Help Support Sea Turtle Rehabilitation

Boca Raton, FL — The 2019 Gumbo Limbo 10K, an annual non-competitive race put on by Friends of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, nearly doubled its funds raised compared to last year – $34,000 – with more participants and sponsors than ever before. Since its inception in 2009, the 10K has provided a platform for runners and sponsors to support ocean conservation and rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles.

Through the annual run, Gumbo Limbo highlights its mission to inspire stewardship of coastal and marine ecosystems and support efforts in environmental education, conservation and research.

“We’ve been inspired by our supporters’ dedication to caring for our coastal ecosystem,” said race chairperson Bronwen de Villiers who has been involved with the event for the past three years. “They see the need and have answered. We are extremely grateful for the growth of this event – and how we are able to positively and significantly impact the work of Gumbo Limbo, students, and researchers.”

The tenth “Run for Turtles,” a nickname used by de Villiers, was held April 14, 2019, and far surpassed last year’s turnout in terms of runners, sponsors and funds raised.

As part of its mission, Friends of Gumbo Limbo commits nearly $200,000 each year to rescuing, rehabilitating and returning sea turtles to the ocean.

“I can’t wait to see the race meet and exceed its potential in the future,” says Ann Brown, founder and CEO of Boca Raton-based Saltability. Brown will serve as co-chair for the 2020 event alongside de Villiers and participated this year as member of the Gumbo Limbo 10K Committee. “It’s all about using our time and talents to help the world and all of its creatures.”
