The New Americans
Jill Enfield is a fine art photographer, author and educator who has achieved international acclaim, in all three of these capacities, as a leading authority in Alternative Photographic Processes. In addition to expertise in current standard digital photo techniques for the last 10+ years, Enfield is also known for her instruction of hand coloring, wet plate collodion, and an array of other photo processes. Her work is in the permanent collections of The Amon Carter Museum of Art, Bellagio Hotel, Bibliothque Nationale, The Boca Raton Museum of Art, Canyon Ranch Spa and Resort, The Crocker Art Museum, The Florida Senate, and more. She is the author of Photo Imaging: A Complete Guide to Alternative Processes (2002) and Jill Enfield’s Guide to Photographic Alternative Processes: Popular Historical and Contemporary Techniques (2013).
The daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Enfield is fascinated by the immigrant experience – the similar threads in all such stories and whether they are viewed as “outsiders or Americans.” Accordingly, she initiated The New Americans project to explore the immigrant experience and to present portraiture of that identity within the journey of a life.
Enfield strives to make her portraits tangible displays of heritage, genealogy, homeland, and transition. Some of today’s “New Americans,” have an easier physical journey by air than their predecessors did in steerage, but their risks are just as great, their fears just as valid. In each of the wet-plate collodion images, The New Americans are heroes, each with his or her own inspirational story.

In the Light of the Present
Diane Farris works in photography and mixed media and has written and illustrated books for children and adults. Her images have been widely shown and published and are represented in many museums, private and public collections, including Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Photography, New Orleans Museum of Art, Tucson’s Center for Creative Photography, Princeton University Art Museum, and more.
“In the Light of the Present expresses my approach to photography,” says Farris. “I strive to be present with my work in this time, our time, while honoring what came before – and considering what we will leave to our children and grandchildren. Of course, for the photographer, Light is our companion: awaited, elusive, gracing.”
The pictures in the Photo Centre exhibition “speak to me and a hope to viewers, such as a girl engrossed in a book by a museum’s vintage painting of girls reading… In these complex times, I am drawn to clarifying and simplifying in general—and in my photography in particular,” she adds.
The public is invited to a FREE Opening Reception for the exhibition Side by Side on Friday, March 22, from 6 to 8 pm.
