FAU Jupiter Presents Jeremy Richman, Ph.D. Sandy Hook Parent to Speak on Recent Brain Research and Violent Behavior

Jeremy Richman, Ph.D.

Boca Raton, FL –The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will present a lecture by Jeremy Richman, Ph.D., a neuro-pharmacologist and CEO of the Avielle Foundation on Tuesday, March 19 at 4 p.m. in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute complex at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus at Jupiter.

“The Neuroscience of Being Human(e)” will examine recent brain research that provides insights that can help everyday citizens to identify the signs and symptoms of someone troubled or in crisis, to responsibly advocate for those at risk of violence to themselves or to others, and, most importantly, to foster kind, healthy and compassionate individuals and communities.

Richman’s daughter, Avielle, was murdered in her first-grade classroom in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012. In response, Richman and his wife started the Avielle Foundation, which is committed to preventing violence and building compassion through brain health research, community engagement and education.

The lecture is part of “Brainy Days 2019,” a celebration of neuroscience in March sponsored by FAU’s Brain Institute and the Palm Heath Foundation. “Brainy Days” is a community outreach initiative designed to share the promise and progress of brain research and to help dispel the stigma associated with brain disorders.

Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members.  For more information, contact the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 561-799-8547 or visit www.fau.edu/osherjupiter. One of FAU’s four pillars that guide the University’s goals and strategic actions, the Institute seeks to unlock the secrets of brain development, function and plasticity and how the mechanisms uncovered can be compromised to drive devastating brain disorders. From the study of neuronal development and signaling to investigations of brain diseases including addiction, autism, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, researchers from FAU’s Brain Institute seek to generate knowledge that benefits society.
