Manatee Lagoon celebrates environmental stewardship as presenting sponsor of Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Tenth Annual Go Blue Awards

On Oct. 26, Loggerhead Marinelife Center celebrated its Tenth Annual Go Blue Awards Luncheon with Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center® as the presenting sponsor. Featuring the Emmy award-winning television show host and conservationist Jeff Corwin as the special guest and keynote speaker, the event recognized businesses, non-profits and individuals who are leading the community in going ‘Blue’ and advancing ocean conservation. The Go Blue Awards is recognized as Florida’s preeminent ocean conservation awards event and brings together people from around the world who are leaders in environmental protection.

As a long-standing steadfast partner of Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental stewardship. In addition to supporting the luncheon, FPL announced the adoption of its second rescued sea turtle patient, Apollo.

Among the award winners was Jacquelyn Kingston, an FPL employee who received the Blue Friend of the Year Award. This award, which recognizes a person who has made significant contributions in marine conservation through work-related activities, was presented to Jacquelyn for her work in sea turtle conservation, environmental education and the implementation of the Responsible Pier Initiative at the Boynton Beach Inlet.

FPL’s Manatee Lagoon is a free, family-focused attraction that provides visitors engaging opportunities to learn about the threatened and unique Florida manatee and the Lake Worth Lagoon ecosystem it inhabits. Based in West Palm Beach, Manatee Lagoon is uniquely situated along the Intracoastal Waterway where the warm-water outflows from the adjacent FPL Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center attract hundreds of manatees each year during the colder winter months, creating an opportunity for the public to learn more about these marine mammals and what is needed to protect their environment. The Center provides initiatives to expand environmental stewardship with a full roster of Lake Worth Lagoon-themed art classes, lagoon-front wellness classes, environmental lectures and Junior Aqua Labs. The 16,000-sq.-ft. center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, and is closed on major holidays. For more information, go to: VisitManateeLagoon.com.
