Twin Palms Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary With Community Event

Children and families of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate the golden anniversary of a beloved Boca Raton institution: Twin Palms Center for the Disabled. The Twin Palms 50th Anniversary Picnic will be held on November 10, 2018 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at their Center at 306 NW 35th Street in Boca Raton and feature bounce houses, face painting, entertainment, silent auction, food by Mississippi Sweets and 5 Spice Asian Street Market, and a special proclamation from the City of Boca Raton. Tickets include lunch and are $20 for adults and $15 for children, and available online at TwinPalmsCenter.org or by calling 561-391-4874.

Twin Palms was founded in 1958 when a group of parents of children with developmental delays in Boca Raton arrived at a difficult predicament: their children had outgrown the public school system and affordable services for adults with disabilities were scarce. Troubled by the thought of their children fading into the background of society, unwilling to institutionalize them, and unable to afford in-home care, they conceived of an affordable, fun, and safe day program that harbored healthy growth and development for their loved ones. It was through the hard work and dedication of those parents that The Boca Raton Society for the Disabled – now called the Twin Palms Center for the Disabled – was established.

“Twin Palms is proud to have been serving the south Florida community for 50 years, helping more than 300 clients achieve their greatest individual potential,” says Twin Palms Executive Director Christopher Berens.

The Center currently serves 24 adults diagnosed with a range of disabilities for five days a week. Each day they are greeted by program staff and volunteers at the facility equipped with a computer center, game room, musical instruments, arts and crafts station, and more.

“Our clients’ families benefit from our work as much as the clients themselves,” says Berens. “They rely on our high-quality services and low-cost tuition, which enable them to continue to work, support their families, and contribute to society.”

The Twin Palms Center 50th Anniversary Picnic family event is sponsored in part by The GEO Group and The Schmidt Family Foundation. This event is a fundraiser for Twin Palms and all proceeds supporting their facility and services. Lunch and entertainment are included in the ticket price ($20 for adults, $15 for children), and guests are encouraged to bring a blanket to roll out on the lawn to to celebrate this golden milestone and look toward the future!
