October 15-21 To Be “Friends of the Library Week”

By: Jack Rubin

Mayor Susan Haynie has made strides in supporting the library during her tenure, perhaps none bigger than her most recent action.

Mayor Haynie issued a proclamation declaring that October 15-21, 2017 is “Friends of the Library” Week in the City of Boca Raton. The proclamation commends the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library group for their helpfulness in the City.

Friends is a non-profit volunteer and membership-based organization that acts to support the events occurring at the library. Part of the City’s acknowledgment of the organization includes praise for the Friends’ support of BRPL’s mission, encouraging providing education, 21st-century learning tools, programs and events for residents of all ages.

Youth and adult educational programs endorsed by the library are the chief beneficiaries of the Friends funds. The group raises money through membership dues, bookstore sales, and donations.

Earlier this year, the Friends of the Library gifted the library with money to help fund summer reading programs. Also covered by the gift was funding for new technology and databases, including Maker and coding classes; and other youth programs such as the annual Library Tea event. The funding went a long way for the library, ultimately supporting multiple library-driven reading initiatives as well.

Clearly, the Friends organization does a great deal to further the Boca Raton Library. Their work never goes unnoticed. Ann Nappa, the Manager of Library Services, remarked, “We are grateful for the City’s leadership in shining a spotlight on the tremendous value that the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library bring to the BRPL.”

Nappa continued, “The staff has been able to bring many opportunities and resources to the community of Boca Raton thanks to the generous support and funding of the Friends’ members and volunteers.”

Mayor Haynie’s proclamation joins multiple libraries across the country in celebrating the American Library Association’s annual event to bring attention to Friends of the Libraries throughout the country. The announcement brings focus to a very helpful volunteer cause.
