Hurricane Irma Update

At noon Hurricane Irma maintains sustained winds of 130 mph and continues moving north at 9 mph.

The Category 4 storm made landfall at 9:10 a.m. at Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys, about 20 miles east of Key West.

Irma is now headed or the southwest Florida coast.

With hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 80 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 220 miles, Boca Raton is expecting the worst storm condition today, including tornadoes between 2pm and 9pm, if you have no power as of right now, we encourage you to make sure you have activated weather alerts on your phone.

A water main broke in the Carriage Hill neighborhood, affecting 25 homes. The break was isolated but crews will not be able to fix it until the sustained winds weaken later tonight.

Please avoid the roads, the winds are set to pick back up shortly and it will be unsafe, and unwise to be on the road.

City Hall and City facilities will be closed Monday, and Schools will be closed until Tuesday unless otherwise advised by Palm Beach County.

Irma should then move inland over the Florida panhandle and southwestern Georgia Monday afternoon.

Heavy squalls with embedded tornadoes are sweeping across South Florida as Irma shifts closer to Florida. A tornado watch is in effect until noon for most of South Florida and the Treasure Coast.

Irma’s winds caused a tornado to touch the ground in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Oakland Park Saturday, as well as Lake Worth on 441 and Lantana Road. It wasn’t immediately clear how much damage was caused.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is urging Floridians to be patient and not quickly rush back to their homes once Irma passes. He says the massive storm is likely to cause widespread damage and that people should stay away until they are told by local officials that they can return.
