Proposed Ordinance Requires Local Businesses to Display Signs about Underage Drinking Laws

By Veronica Haggar

Jonah Fisher, president of Teen Coalition in Action (TCIA), a youth division of Palm Beach County Substance Awareness Coalition proposed to the City Council the passing of the Point Of Purchase Ordinance for the city of Boca Raton on Tuesday’s meeting.

The proposed law, supported by Boca Mayor Susan Haynie, would require local business that sell alcoholic beverages to display a notice that states the underage drinking laws.

The sign would also include the contact information of the Boca Raton Police Department and Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco to report those who buy for, or sell to people under the age of 21.

“Posting these signs lets people know the consequences of breaking the law and giving alcohol to anyone underage,” said Jonah Fisher, president of TCIA, during the City Council regular meeting.

The law is already active in many cities in Florida, including West Palm Beach, Greenacres, and Delray Beach.

“My hope is that posting these signs will continue to eliminate this poor choice and keep those who live and visit Boca Raton safe,” said Fisher.

On April 26th, a meeting will take place at the City Hall in which business owners and residents will discuss the matter and the council will decide whether or not it should be approved.
