Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty to retire from position

Tallahassee: In a tribute to longtime Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty who will be resigning from his role effective May 2, 2016, the Florida Association of Health Underwriters (FAHU) presented him with a plaque, which read, in part;

“He has served as insurance commissioner since the creation of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) in 2003. He was appointed by the Financial Services Commission, which is comprised of the Governor, CFO, Attorney General, and Agricultural Commissioner. He was subsequently confirmed by Governor Jeb Bush and his Cabinet. His work with the National Association of Insurance commissioners (NAIC) was perhaps the pinnacle of his career, leading the organization as the NAIC president in 2012. McCarty began his work with the Florida Department of Insurance in 1991.”

“Insurance Commissioner McCarty’s service to the great State of Florida has been exceptional. Over the years, he has worked tirelessly with the leaders of the Florida Association of Health Underwriters to address health insurance legislation and the impact of healthcare reform.”

FAHU President Paul Deininger states, “I would personally like to thank Commissioner McCarty for his many years of dedication and service. He will be greatly missed by the consumers and insurance agents in Florida. Commissioner McCarty demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in guiding Florida through much needed reforms in health insurance”. Deininger further stated; “ On behalf of the 900 members of the Florida Association of Health Underwriters, we want to thank Commissioner McCarty and wish him well in his future pursuits.”

FAHU President-Elect, Ken Stevenson had this to say: “FAHU shared a common bond with Commissioner McCarty in always protecting the consumer before anything else. He demonstrated this by supporting legislation that required registration and accountability of unlicensed Navigators created by the Affordable Care Act, to the state of Florida.

National Association of Health Underwriters CEO, Janet Trautwein, who worked with Commissioner McCarty in his efforts with the NAIC, states, “Kevin McCarty was the longtime voice of reason as the nation grappled with healthcare reform. McCarty’s comprehensive understanding of Florida’s health care system and dedication to public service will be sorely missed. We not only want to thank him for his service but offer congratulations as he begins his next chapter. We hope McCarty’s successor will continue to promote sound health insurance principles that ensure access to affordable and high quality health care.”

The Florida Association of Health Underwriters has appreciated Commissioner McCarty and shares his focus on protecting the consumers, while promoting the value of the insurance agent.
