Local Soccer Star Gets Hall of Fame Call

KristyHartofilis-280x400Kristy Whelchel Hartofilis, daughter of former Boca Raton Mayor Susan Whelchel, is headed to the Hall of Fame.

Whelchel Hartofilis will be one of the seven inducted into the Palm Beach County Sports Hall of Fame during a special ceremony on March 20 at the Palm Beach Convention Center.  

The former Spanish River High School standout joins the ranks of local sportswriter Craig Dolch, Inner City Youth Golfers’ Incorporated founder Malachi Knowles, Noah Babin (ice hockey), Jackie K. Manuel and Richard Rellford (both basketball) and Andy McGaffigan (baseball) among the Class of 2016 inductees.

During her senior season at Spanish River High School back in 1995, Whelchel Hartofilis totaled 42 goals and 23 assists en route to leading the Sharks to their first-ever Final Four State Appearance

The former Sun Sentinel Player of the Year then attended Duke University where she started at midfield all four years and earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors each of those season.

Whelchel Hartofilis was also a six-time state champion, two-time regional champion and national finalist with the Team Boca Soccer Club, in addition to being a starter for the under-19 and under-21 U.S. national soccer team. She and her teammates won the Nordic Cup title in 1997 with the U.S. team.
